Understating wind noise

Manufacturers are trying their best to make their vehicles noise-proof, but let’s make it real. The RAV4 is not Lexus or BMW; they put a lot of money into making their cabin soundproof. If Toyota does that, then its demand will be very low because the price will be high and most people can’t afford it.

Except for Toyota luxuries, cars invest in research and development for wind noise reduction.

When I drive at a lower speed, I rarely hear wind noise, but when I start driving fast, around 50 mph, I hear little noise, but the noise becomes much louder if the speed is around 70mph.

Compared to older models, the newer models have much less wind noise.

Automakers are aware of the wind noise.

Let’s Check some research work to see if the wind noise makes a difference in buying the RAV4 or not.

  • Many customers have complained about noise; they want a quiet cabin (source).
  • Most engineers are working so hard in wind tunnels to eliminate excessive wind noise while working with computers and microphones.
  • Many advanced technologies and high-quality materials make it easy for manufacturers to create a quiet and smothering ride.

How Manufacturers Reduce Wind Noise

  • They make the cabin quieter by adding insulation and foam.
  • They reduce the vibration by isolating the suspension.
  • They designed the body to be aerodynamic to diminish resistance.
  • They optimize the tire. Tred to lesson on the road,
  • They changed their engine design to run with less noise.

Toyota mainly focused on fuel efficiency over creating a quiet cabin.

Common Causes

  • Doors and seals, windows, and sunroofs
  • Side mirrors and roof rack
  • Paint protection film coating

Wind noise at the door

If the weather is bad and a high amount of air passes through door seals, it will make noise because door seals prevent moisture and keep air out.

Noise at the Roof Rack

Roof racks normally make more wind noise because they sit on the top of your vehicle. If your rack isn’t aerodynamic or has sharp edges, it can make an excessive amount of wind noise.

Fixing Door Gap Wind Noise

Fixing the door wind noise will not cost you more, but it isn’t fully eliminated. Here are some instructions to follow:.

  • You must clean the surface of the car where weather stripping is installed. Use clean and soapy water.
  • You must install the strip in a single motion, starting from the front of the vehicle, passing over the front door, and continuing to the rear door.
  • You can install more weather stripping down the side where the rear door meets the vehicle.

Fixing Roof Rack Wind Noise

You just need to buy a wind reflector to reduce the noise.

Is Wind Noise bad?

Telling you about myself, I am not actually bothered by wind noise, even at the highway, but some people keep complaining, so let’s check out some surveys conducted by hundreds of Toyota RAV4 owners.

39% of users of the RAV4 said its wind noise is louder than expected, while 61% said the wind noise is just fine.

Conclusion

The wind noise in Toyota is a little bit frustrating and annoying. 39% of RAV4 owners keep complaining that wind noise is much louder than expected, while 61% said wind noise is just fine.
