Toyota VSC Light and What Does It Mean?  

VSC helps us maintain balance and safety when we’re turning corners by adjusting the power to the wheels to maintain traction. It prevents skidding or sliding, making driving safer and more stable.  

It means if the VSC lights are on, then your vehicle system control is off. You need to manually shut down the system. Then you turn on the engine, and the lights will go out.  

If any of the lights won’t turn off, then there is a problem with your VSC. Maybe you feel you don’t have control when turning corners, especially on slippery roads.

How It Works  

For example, if you do not have VSC, when your front tire is slipping, your vehicle won’t turn properly. It doesn’t matter if you turn the steering wheel correctly. It is because your front tire loses its grip.  

If your tire regains its traction, then maybe you take control back of the vehicle.  

The same goes for the back wheel. If it slips, the car will spin around, and it doesn’t matter whether you have full control over the steering wheel.  

But with the VSC steering wheel, cars move together. Then it doesn’t matter if your wheel is slipping; the engine will slow down and the brakes will help you regain control.

When To Turn It Off  

In my expertise, Toyota doesn’t advise you to turn off the VSC button. But there is one button that allows us to deactivate the system. There must be a reason, so let’s check it out.  

The only condition that VSC must be off is if both tires are stuck in snow or mud. To free both tires, the VSC and TRAC systems must be off. Once you find a normal and stable road, activate the system again.  

What Does the Flashing VSC Light Mean?  

When the VSC light is flashing, it is safe to assume there is a problem. Maybe your TRAC light will be on as well. If that happens, contact your local dealer.  

Is it safe to drive?  

As I mentioned earlier, if you’re stuck in snow or mud, your VSC must be off; otherwise, you don’t want to drive with a VSC light for long.  

It won’t hurt or damage your vehicle, but it is a very important safety system because it prevents accidents from happening. Fix it as soon as possible.  

The VSC system makes sure the steering wheel and vehicle directions are in control.  

For instance, researchers studied how well VSC worked before it became standard in all cars. They looked at crashes involving police across six states. Out of all the crashes they studied, 13,987 cars didn’t have VSC, but 5,671 did.  

The findings showed that cars with VSC had 11.2% fewer crashes where they hit the front of other vehicles. Also, there was a big 52.6% drop in crashes where the car hit something all by itself. (National Library of Medicine).

The VSC system was added by Toyota for some good reason. It will ensure your safety. The VSC system must be deactivated in some conditions, like when your vehicle has both tires stuck in mud or snow.
